Extension on deadline for VAT return and payments in UAE
The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced this Tuesday, the extension on the deadline of VAT returns and settlements of payable tax to next month – May 28, 2020 – this will cover Value added tax return and payables only for the tax period ending on March 31, 2020.
The Federal Tax Authority’s decision was made due to the current circumstance which is the rising threat of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that has caused stringent controls and movement in certain areas here in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is now greatly affecting the daily transactions and mobility of the vast population of our country. This exceptional directive is applicable only for the tax period ending on March 31, 2020. The extension of the deadline is for VAT registrants that are subject to monthly and quarterly tax filing. The previous deadline was set to April 28, 2020, and to help VAT registrants ease tax burdens, it is now extended accordingly in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) is committed to extending help to all VAT registrants who are managing the challenges and abrupt changes brought by the precautionary measures implemented to contain the further spread of COVID-19. The current precautionary measures have hampered businesses of all industries and with the stringent controls, it is not avoided that submission before the scheduled deadlines will be affected. The extension to May 28, 2020, will give time for registrants to fulfill the respective obligations of filing tax returns and settle tax payable within legal timeframes.
The Federal Tax Authority advised VAT registrants to fulfill these obligations accordingly:
- VAT registrants that are subject for monthly filing, should settle payables and tax returns within the period of March 1-31, 2020 not later than Thursday, May 28, 2020
- VAT registrants that are subject for quarterly filing, should settle payables and tax returns from January 1, 2020, to March 31, 2020, not later than Thursday, May 28, 2020
- VAT registrants that are subject for both monthly and quarterly VAT return filing and payment settlements should ensure that Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has received the tax payables
These changes will help VAT registrants process VAT returns and tax payables in an expanded time frame. The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) emphasized that this sudden directive only covers VAT returns and tax payables that fall to the previous deadline which is March 31, 2020, and will not affect other tax payables that are scheduled in April 2020.
